In short summary:

The good... The talent, Soma was awesome, Shawn Farquhar was fantastic. The closing ceremonies was huge. Meeting new people and seeing old friends. Siegfried and Roy. Talent and more talent.

The bad... The video and sound a lot of the time. The late start of shows and lectures. Shawn Anthony. Too many rings....

I drove into Las Vegas around 11am on Sunday. I went to New York, NY hotel to see if I could check in but unfortunately my room wasn't ready. I decided to go to the Orleans hotel and check-in to the convention. I saw Howard Hamburg and Luis from the Magic Castle and I sat and talked with them until the dealer room opened. There was about 20 dealers in the dealer room. I didn't really see anything I wanted to buy. I did see a demonstration of Mojoe and it was quite good. I also saw my friends, Bizzaro and Jungle Josh.

At 2pm, there was a "Bull Session" hosted by Obie O'Brien. This was where you could sign-up and show your favorite trick. I signed up and showed my wild joker trick and heard saw "ooh's" in the audience.

Later in the evening, the welcome party hosted by Jeff McBride started at 8pm. There was a cash bar, a mashed potato buffet with shrimps and other goodies, a a large roast beef, and crackers and cheese. Several students of Jeff McBrides school performed. Amazing Jonathan and Sophie Evens showed up and there was crowds around them. I saw Erica and Irene Larsen too.

At 10pm I attended the Fielding West lecture which was $10. I don't know how I feel about paying for a lecture at a conference I already paid for but it was good. Fielding is very informative and entertaining. He also provided performance tips. One thing I enjoyed but do not know if I will use is swallowing a balloon and taking it back out.

Monday morning came and there was a 10am lecture with Joshua Jay. He was very good but I didn't find much that I would use. He did show Troy Hooser's Charming Chinese Challenge and I like that a lot but I do not know if it would fit my character. He also showed Cornered, which I perform already and he showed a 3 coin vanish that is similar to what I do already. It was a good lecture and I did buy some items.

At 11:30am Max Maven interviewed Sandy Marshall. Before the interview, I was sitting in the front, levitating a finger ring. Next to me, a couple seats over, John Lovick was watching me with Mac King next to him. I asked what he was looking at as he was trying to look under the ring. I walked to him, floating the ring and asked him to stick out a finger. He actually gave me the finger, I then said "No silly, stick OUT your finger". He stuck out his middle finger. I landed the ring on his finger and backed away. I said, I am just working on a hook. The interview started and included video of Jay Marshall. It was interesting stories and history.

In the afternoon, 1pm, was the WMS Stage Show. This was cool Fielding West was the MC and the acts were awesome with an exception. Tina Lenert did her ring act, Shawn Farquhar did a bottle and tube act with a volunteer, Henrik Bothe did plate spinning and Neonman, Jan Rouven was great, Soma performed his FISM act and received a standing ovation. The only bad issue was Shawn Anthony. His ring act started after he removed rings from their bag, his metamorphosis was slow and didn't have a twist he promised, his story of levitation ended with a zombie ball act.

Later in the afternoon, 4pm, was a performance by Max Howard of Professor Gus Richardson. It was a great theater piece but I was tired and the presentation was not helping my sleepy condition.

6pm started the Teen Closeup Competition. All the acts were awesome. I wish I could remember all the names but one kid did a soda jerk cups and balls routine that had personality, one Canadian had presentational skills, and the Korean kid was amazing. He looked like he was schooled by Shoot.

8pm was the Encore Foundation Show with Lance Burton, Mac King, Luke Jermay, Michael Carbona (who sculpted shaving creme all over his face and body), John Lovick, Johnny Thompson and Lindsay Benner who presented a great story with juggling. It was a perfect performance.

Late evening, after 11pm, was the Mickey Silver lecture. Mickey Silver was the most magical coin act I have seen in a while. It was a good lecture.

Midnight was the Bowling with the Stars of Magic. I made friends from the closeup bull session and I bowled with new friends Jeff, Adrian, Glen and Wess. There were dollar drinks, and it was so fun. Shawn Faquhar bowled next to us and it was great hanging out with him. We didn't win any prizes but I got to talk with Becky Wells, one of the coordinators of WMS, and she is wonderful.

Tuesday, 10am, was the lecture given by Shawn Farquhar. This lecture changed my life again. Seeing his practical methods and also seeing Torn 2 Pieces gave me great enthusiasm. I bought his notes and Torn 2 Pieces. He is one of the best lecturers I have seen.

At 1pm we sat for the international stage contest. There were 8 acts and I only knew Chris Randall but the acts were awesome. Nester Hato came out with red hair like me but did a color changing act with cards, balls, his outfit and then his hair. It was great. The peoples choice went to the Canadian pair Trevor and Lorena Waters and it had so much personality and was the most entertaining.

4pm brought the Adult Closeup, there was some great acts. My friend Jeff did some great card word, some d'lite work and gypsy thread. A girl did some great coin work. The clear winner was Ben Jackson who did some productions of a lemon and lemonade leading into coin one. It was great.

At 6 we went to the Shawn Anthony lecture and didn't have much that I cared for.

Evening Closeup show was great. Bizarro did a great act that was zany and ended with a signed card stabbed to his back with a pocket knife. Shawn Farquhar did cups and balls ending with solid steel cups. Howard Hamburg had some awesome card work. Joshua Jay presented card work as well. Curtis Kam must have pockets in his palms. He produced like 16 real coins from empty hands. Mickey Silver is in-describable but he turned his face into a human slot machine.

Wednesday was the last day with the Teen Stage Finals at 9am. These teens were so good,, some of them better than the adult acts I saw.

At 11:15am, I went to the Soma lecture which was about music and sound effects, he performed David Stone's Cell. He had a signed card and then it disappears to end up in the battery compartment of a cell phone. He also showed a new effect that he hasn't marketed yet of signed card supposed to go to pocket but doesn't. He then turns the deck into an illustrated cell phone and dials the Magic Call Center. It ends up in the volunteers pocket.

1pm was the Awards Show and holy moly what a closer. Lance Burton with Mike Caveney opened the show. Mike Caveney was very funny. Then came out Sigfried and Roy, it was amazing. They joked, and then came out Lance with a proclamation that March 3rd was declared by the governor was to be Sigfried and Roy Day. Then from the back, Penn and Teller entered yelling and presented a proclamation from the governor that March would be Sigfried and Roy month. Criss Angel showed up, with not a lot of applause. He said some nice things and put his handcuff necklace on Roy and then on Sigfried later. The acts were awesome. Jan Rouven did a great puzzle illusion with a story of Sigfried and Roy. Hiroki Hara did a great mask, umbrella and manipulation act.

4pm was the closing party and was a little slow. Then I left about 6pm

It was great seeing Derek, Craig, Rick, AJ, Jeremy, Josh, Jeff, Adrian, Wess, and Bizarro. It was awesome meeting all the new people and great magicians. I had a blast and will be back next year. I thank Becky Wells for all the unused show tickets with the drink coupons on the back and awesome converations, I thank Shawn Farquhar for being such and awesome guy and all the magic. Now it's time for rest because in a couple weeks, it's Magic-Con.

Dirk Arthur Show Ends at Tropicana

In an earlier entry of his Luxe Life blog, Robin Leach hinted at possible changes on the Vegas strip which would result in a possible move or cancelation for one magical performer. There were rumors that one of the shows impacted might be that of Dirk Arthur. Today, Dirk confirmed that he would indeed be ending his six year run at the Tropicana.

“I look forward to the next stage my cats and I will perform on and promise to keep everyone posted on the development of Saber, my 3-month-old white tiger cub who has recently been introduced to the Las Vegas community, as well as where they can see us next.”

As part of the continuing makeover of the Tropicana, the property also closed its long-running Folies Bergere last year after 49 years. Only Wayne Newton’sOnce Before I Go remains there for the moment.

We regret to inform everyone that Pat Page is no longer with us. We will bring you more details as they become available but until then we’ve reposted Derren Brown’s tribute to the man, which originally appeared on his own blog.

I’ve just heard the very sad news that Patrick Page has passed away. Magicians worth their salt will be know that Patrick was a genius of our craft, and a famously generous man. I knew him a little from his consultancy work on some of my projects: he was a brilliantly rude, sharp-witted, sensationally likeable Scot, better at magic and more knowledgeable than any of us. All of us at Objective are devastated by the news. For some time, the sheer force of his personality has kept him going through illness, but now he doesn’t need to fight any more. At the same time, as with any powerfully creative force, he will live on strongly and defiantly through his work and the legacy he leaves. There’s a bit of Patrick every night in Enigma, and in countless other performances happening now across the world.
It is an honour to have known him, and to continue to know him through his particular genius. Much love to his friends and family from all of us.

Confrontation, the movie

Last night I went to a walk through of The Big Show I am performing on the 31st. I hung out with some of the talent and the producers of the event. One interesting person I met was a 21 year old hypnotist haberdasherer. He had a awesome suit and a cell phone that he created, made out of wood, rotary dial and World War II leather strap. He was a character and it will be a fun show. I stayed for a couple of beers with the producers and these artists. I was doing some magic to a guy named Tim and he gave me the best over-the-top responses. I have to get him to be in the audience for my demo tape. At one point, he said to his buddies "This guy is the devil".

After the meeting at Old Town Pub, Nikki and Andres gave me a ride to the North Hollywood subway station and I rode it to the Magic Castle. I saw some of the regular characters and was happy to get out of the rain. I noticed the afro of Zach Waldman so I called him over. When he was within talking distance, he exclaimed "What the hell were you doing, Pete told me you were doing magic in Ye Old King's Head". I told him, I was not performing, I was showing an effect to two friends. Zach said "I perform magic in there, thats my venue". Not challenging him, I told him that I don't live down there anymore, and Pete lost customers that night and I don't enjoy that bar anymore which I am unhappy about because I like the bar staff and security employees. I only went to that bar because I lived behind it. The thing that bothers me. I have never seen Zach Waldman perform magic for the groups of people at Ye Olde Kings Head and I lived behind the bar for over a year and half. When I did see him perform, it was for a small group of magicians to give him criticism about his act he was bring to a college in Utah or something.

I went home on the subway and while I was in the station, a homeless man said "What's wrong with your hair?". I laughed and told him I was a magician. I feel silly when I tell people I am a magician without showing something magical. I put a half dollar in front of him on the subway bench. He watched me. I waved my hands over it, then waved my hands again, then the coin vanished. It was enjoyed.

We have been receiving many emails requesting a schedule of events for Magic-Con, mainly so registrants can effectively plan their travel arrangement to and from San Diego. Although we do not wish to reveal the schedule, we do encourage everyone to arrive Thursday, March 18th and stay through Sunday, March 21st.

The first event of Magic-Con 2010 will begin Thursday evening at 7pm, registration is expected to open around 4pm, however, will remain open throughout the weekend for those arriving late. The last event of Magic-Con will end late Sunday afternoon with a closing ceremony expected to begin at 5pm, and lasting no more than an hour.

Therefore, if you must leave Sunday evening, please try and book a later flight. The San Diego International Airport is about a 5 minute cab ride from the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

DEAF MAGICIAN DISCOVERING THE MAGIC OF HEARING!

Deaf Magician Ron Jaxon just had coclear implants activated which will help him to begin to hear again after 20 years of deafness. I was quite honored by the content of a message from Ron to me which I'll share here:

I just got turned on a few hours ago and it's very exciting. Nothing sounds right yet because I can't tell what I'm hearing. But I am hearing things. Voices sounds like "Squawk Squawk" right now. I'm kind of in a training stage right now where I'm suppose to keep turning it up to kind of challenge myself yet never go loud enough where it's uncomfortable. So everything is going to sound strange to me for a while until my brain learns to distinguish sounds again.

Speech is a little down the road but it's coming. I really don't know how long it'll take to be able to understand speech or how far I'll go with it. Some people like me go on to understanding 80% to 90% of speech (Which is more then most people can understand. Especially married people. LOL). But on the other hand there are others like me who can only reach the ability to understand maybe 20% is speech. So I really don't know how far I'll go in that but I do know that I'll be able to "Hear" voices because I've only been "Bionic" for about 3 hours now and I can already hear them.

One of the things I look forward to if I can hear again is to listen to the interviews on your site. In fact I've been doing research and talking to other people who have had the implant that I might be getting and they told me that I'll have to do some "home work" if I get the implant. My homework will be to listen to things. My brain will have to relearn to hear and recognize sounds. This includes voices.

It's kind a strange things but they say that it's not uncommon for someone to be able to hear a voice but not really be able to understand what the voice is saying at first. Anyway, I figure I'll use the interviews on your site as part of my "home work" to help learn to recognize speech again. I might as well do it with a subject I enjoy. It's an exciting thought.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

Obviously, I wish Ron all of the best in his recovery and cannot express how thrilled I am that my little magic project might help him in some way!

During local auditions for the upcoming season of Britain’s Got Talent, a magician in Glasgow decided to make a £10 bill disappear and reappear. Not bad, right? The real kicker came after he left, when a show producer realized he had actually made off with her purse including £90.

According to MyParkMag.co.uk the cops were alerted but since the magician gave a fake name during the auditions, the victim doesn’t have much hope to get the money back.

Talk about leaving your audience wanting more.

Scarlett Arrested For Alleged Domestic Abuse Of 67-Year-Old Boyfriend

A 21-year-old woman who had a magic show at the Riviera this year was arrested for assaulting her 67-year-old boyfriend last week.
Rachel Jessee, who starred in “Scarlett and her Seductive Ladies of Magic,” was arrested today by Henderson police on one count of misdemeanor domestic battery.
Her arrest report states that she and her live-in boyfriend, John Lewis, had an argument at their Henderson home. Lewis told police she grabbed him by the ear and struck him with a fist in his right eye. Police said that Lewis was bleeding from behind his ears and had a scratch to the back of his neck. He also had swelling under his right eye, a bite mark to his left tricep and scratches to his chest. He refused medical assistance.

Late Late Show’s Magic Week Postponed

According to Magic Magazine, the 2009 edition of the Late Late Show’s “Magic Week” has been postponed. A production schedule is being blamed for the delay which will push the week of magic guests back to February.

Lance Burton, Jason Hudy and Ed Alonzo are returning with one act making their Magic Week debut. Neil Patrick Harris will again provide introductions.
